Better questions. Better discovery.

Neil Rackham

SPIN Selling organizes discovery around situation, problem, implication, and need-payoff questions. It gives sellers a way to explore a need before proposing a solution.

The SalesCoach takeaway

Help the buyer explore the importance of the problem.

An independent SalesCoach interpretation with an original exercise.

Situation and problem

Learn the context without asking the buyer to repeat information you could have researched. Then explore where their current approach falls short. “Where do things tend to get delayed?”

Implication

Understand the effects of the problem. “When that happens, which other teams are affected?” Ask neutrally. Do not inflate the cost of the problem or assume that it is urgent.

Need-payoff

Invite the buyer to describe the value of improvement. “If that handoff became reliable, what would it make possible?” Their answer helps both of you assess whether change is worthwhile.

Make it yours
