Discovery

Prepare better questions. Hear better answers.

Use AI to prepare and rehearse discovery without turning the conversation into a script.

The useful answer

Discovery helps both sides understand whether a change is worthwhile. Use prepared questions as a starting point, then follow the buyer’s answers.

Set a shared purpose

Open with a brief explanation of what you hope to understand and ask what would make the conversation useful for the buyer. Establish available time and leave space to decide whether another step makes sense.

Avoid starting with a long company introduction. A concise statement of relevance is enough to earn the next question. If you have prepared a hypothesis about their problem, present it as something to validate.

Explore the current situation

Ask how the work happens today, where it breaks down, and who is affected. Invite a recent example. Specific events reveal more than a broad question such as “What are your pain points?”

Follow the answer. Ask what happened next, how often the issue appears, and how the team handles it now. Do not attach a cost or severity the buyer did not establish. Let them explain the impact in their own terms.

Understand the desired change

Ask what better would look like and how they would know it had happened. Explore the reason to act now, other priorities, dependencies, and who needs to participate in evaluating a solution.

A useful question is “What would need to be true for your team to feel confident moving forward?” It can uncover implementation concerns, proof requirements, timing constraints, and decision criteria without assuming there is already an approved project.

Use AI as a rehearsal partner

Provide an anonymized role, business context, and your offer. Ask AI to play a skeptical but reasonable buyer and respond one question at a time. After practice, ask which questions were leading, vague, or disconnected from the answer.

A simulated buyer cannot validate the real customer’s needs. Use rehearsal to improve your listening and phrasing, then treat the live conversation as new evidence. Never copy fictional role-play details into the CRM.

Recap and agree on the next decision

Summarize the current situation, desired outcome, unresolved questions, and people involved. Ask for corrections. If there is a fit, propose a next step that resolves a specific uncertainty. If there is not, say so and document the reason.

Measure whether your notes capture the buyer’s goal, decision process, and a confirmed next action. Review examples with a colleague. Better discovery is observable in the quality of decisions and handoffs, not the number of questions you managed to ask.

Put AI to work

A prompt to make this practical.

Help me prepare for a discovery call with this buyer role and verified context. Give me six open questions, possible follow-up probes, and a short recap structure. Mark assumptions. Then role-play one question at a time and critique how well I listen.

Use anonymized information in an approved tool. Verify the result before sending or updating records.
