Sales leadership & entrepreneurship

Mary Kay Ash

Bring sincere recognition into sales leadership and client relationships, with specific attention to the work that builds trust.

The SalesCoach takeaway

Notice people. Recognize useful work.

From the teacher’s published ideas

The idea worth learning.

Mary Kay’s official account of its founder’s values emphasizes the Golden Rule, helping people feel important and recognizing others. Mary Kay Ash also spoke publicly about encouragement and confidence. The lesson here focuses on those leadership and relationship ideas, which can be applied within many sales environments.

Recognize a behavior someone can repeat

“Great job” is pleasant but gives little information. “You noticed that the implementation team was missing from the call and brought them in before we promised a timeline” identifies useful judgment. Make recognition accurate, timely and suited to the person’s preferences. Some people appreciate a team mention; others prefer a quiet thank-you. Ask rather than assume.

Reward the work that protects the relationship

If you recognize only the largest closed deal, people may miss the importance of a careful handoff, an honest forecast or a thoughtful decision to disqualify. In your next team review, notice one behavior that helped a buyer or colleague avoid confusion. This does not replace performance expectations. It makes the standards for good work more visible.

Respect the client’s effort and constraints

A customer may be coordinating approvals, comparing options and doing their normal job while evaluating your offer. Make that work easier with a clear recap, a manageable request and reliable updates. SalesCoach example: “Thank you for clarifying the two approval steps. I have organized the proposal so each reviewer can find what they need.” Be specific about the help you received instead of flattering the person to advance a deal.

Pair encouragement with useful coaching

Confidence grows more usefully when praise includes a next practice. Start with what the salesperson did well, describe the gap you observed, and rehearse one improvement together. Avoid vague personality judgments. “Let us practice summarizing the buyer’s answer before moving on” gives someone a skill to work on. Recognition should support learning and honest feedback, not hide a problem that needs attention.

Make it yours

One thing to try.

Write three specific thank-you notes: one to a client, one to a teammate and one to someone who helped a handoff. Name the action and why it mattered. Review each note yourself before deciding whether to send it.

A practice prompt.

Help me draft a brief, sincere recognition note using only this observed action and its impact: [facts]. Keep it professional and specific. Do not invent achievements, add flattery, or attach a sales request. Offer a private-message version and a team-meeting version for my review.

What to review.

Notice which helpful behaviors you recognize and whether your feedback names a concrete action. Ask recipients what support is useful instead of assuming praise alone improves performance.
