Motivational speaking & personal development

Les Brown

Use motivation to prepare, communicate clearly, and keep learning after a difficult sales day.

The SalesCoach takeaway

Recover your confidence. Improve your next conversation.

About Les Brown.

Les Brown is an author, motivational speaker, and former broadcaster. He also served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1977 to 1981. His speaking and writing focus on possibility, personal agency, and overcoming setbacks. He is included here for his contribution to confidence and communication, rather than as the inventor of a specific sales close.

From the teacher’s published ideas

The idea worth learning.

Brown’s official resource collection includes Live Your Dreams and talks about possibility and persistence. His speaker-training work also emphasizes developing a message from personal experience. SalesCoach applies these broad themes to recovering after rejection and communicating with purpose; the exercises below are not an official Les Brown sales methodology.

Separate the outcome from your identity

A lost sale tells you something about an opportunity, not everything about your ability. Write what the buyer actually said, what remains unknown, and what you can change. “The project was postponed” is an observation; “I am no good at this” is a broad conclusion. Let the debrief lead to one practical adjustment, such as checking the budget cycle earlier.

Turn encouragement into a small action

Before the next call, choose one achievable behavior: ask a clearer question, listen without interrupting, or summarize the buyer’s goal. Prepare the evidence you need and give yourself a few minutes to settle. Confidence can grow through preparation and repetition. Enthusiasm alone cannot remove a product limitation or create a buyer’s budget.

Use your story to make the lesson useful

Tell a short, truthful story about a problem you encountered, what you changed, and what you learned. Connect it to the buyer’s question, then return the attention to them. Ask which part sounds familiar and which part is different. Do not invent an adversity story or disclose a customer’s private experience to create an emotional reaction.

Persist in learning and respect the answer

Persistence can mean improving your targeting, practicing a presentation, or finding a better-fit opportunity. It does not mean contacting a buyer repeatedly after a clear request to stop. SalesCoach example: “Thank you for being direct. I will close this out. If there is feedback you would like to share, I am happy to learn from it.” Keep the next useful action within your control.

Make it yours

One thing to try.

After one disappointing conversation, write a three-line debrief: observed facts, one lesson, and one next action. Then rehearse a 60-second truthful story that helps explain your offer.

What to review.

Track whether you complete the debrief and practice the chosen behavior. Review the quality of conversations over time; motivation is not proof that a sale will happen.
